Paliative Care



 

 

            This new type of care services aims at addressing the specific needs of terminally ill patients and those of their families by addressing the following needs:

  • medical (symptom control)
  • emotionally
  • socially
  • physically
  • spiritually

            It represents an active and comprehensive type of care for those patients whose illness does not respond to traditional treatment anymore.

History:

  • 1843 > France - Jeanne Garnier sets up the first Care Center for terminally ill patients

  • 1967 > England - Cicely Saunders (founder of St. Christopher’s Hospice, London)

  • 1992 > Romania: in Bucharest, the Romanian Association for Palliative Care is established; Hospice of Hope, the first Center for Palliative Care and Training is set up in Brasov

  • 2000 > Palliative Care gains recognition as being a distinctive discipline by the Romanian Ministry of Health and Family
